Workstations have historically been single processor systems. Some 2-way
SMP boxes are beginning to emerge as workstation-class systems including
some from Sun. The Alpha 21164 is still the fastest single processor and is
probably several times fater than a 2-way SPARC-based system. I've heard
DEC say that the an Alpha 21164 system that they have in the lab running at
300Mhz is more than twice as fast as a four-way Pentium 90Mhz system. You'd
better have a pretty big desk if you've got a 64-way Sun workstation on it.
Besides, Lightwave doesn't run on Sparc.:-)

The DEC system probably counts but we understand that DEC is still not
shipping any Alpha modules to replace the existing x86 CPUs. We have also
heard from DEC directly that they have no near-term plans for any Windows NT
workstation built around the 21164. They may have one for their Unix and
VMS customers but to Lightwave users we didn't think that mattered.
